Joelle Jensen and Jedediah Morfit: Décor/Decorum
July 31 - August 21, 2008
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is pleased to present this Spotlight Exhibition: Jedediah Morfit’s work explores irresistible contemporary sculptural taboos including craft, religion, and narrative. His sculpted plates are as much a celebration of the pleasures of carving and storytelling as they are an examination of the problem of creating meaningful narratives in disjointed times. Joelle Jensen presents quiet, thoughtful and compelling views of lives left behind. The photographs of her parents’ home are beautiful, emotional and often humorous, looking almost scientifically at the spaces and emotional connections made between what was their life and the passage of time.

Volum Attempts: The Space of Books
Organized by the Purtill family
June 7 – October 25, 2008
In a provocative parallel to their highly collaborative practice, the exhibition presents Purtill Family Business’s own ideas alongside invited participants whose work demonstrates an inspired relationship with and to publishing. Among the components of the show are photographic projects that look at the spaces and images
of books, a “diaporama” event by French artist Pierre Leguillon; a “Collective Investigation” event by Minnesota-based artist Matt Bakkom; the complete catalogue of Onestar Press (an artist book publisher); and publications selected by Bettina Funcke (curator and editor), Matthew Marks (art dealer), Christoph Keller (art publisher), and William Pym (writer). Featured will be an excerpt from “Double Spreads,” an exhibition of photographs of double-page spreads taken by graphic designers (organized by Christoph Keller and Jérome Saint-Loubert Bié). In addition to the publications on display, a bookmark and two artist’s books by Zoe Strauss and Heidi Giannotti will be published and distributed for free.

See No Evil: Monks and Friars by WYSO
Jun 6 2008 - Feb 27 2009
The artist known as WYSO (1915-1994) found humor in life, and his art reflects that attitude. Two of his brothers and a nephew were monks, and he deeply respected their prayerful and spiritual monastic life. His creativity, however, led him to explore an imaginary humorous side of his subjects, portraying them in playful situations.

Curious and Commonplace: European Popular Prints of the 1800s
May 31, 2008 - August 24, 2008
This colorful exhibition of more than eighty worksselected from the Museum’s rich collection of popular prints invites the public to enter a forgotten world of fantastic and familiar imagery. Published in a variety of languages, these prints were sold on street corners and in shops all across Europe and could be found in every household, city tavern, and village schoolroom. Although nineteenth-century Europe witnessed an explosion in the production of inexpensive popular prints of all kinds, surprisingly few fine examples survive today. Their production ran the full gamut from crudely cut woodblock prints to refined chromolithographs; they vary dramatically between austere black-and-white specimens and swank, candy-colored delights.
Transcending the Literal: Photographs by Ansel Adams from the Collection
March 1, 2008 - August 17, 2008
More than 20 years after his death, Ansel Adams (1902–1984) remains one of the world’s most beloved and widely exhibited American photographers. Comprised of more than 40 photographs selected from the Museum’s extensive holdings of the artist’s work, this exhibition focuses on Adams’s less-familiar landscape images in order to demonstrate his innate understanding of graphic form and balanced design.

One Long Funeral
Song
August, 2008
Space 1026 is pleased to present a collaborative installation by San Francisco Bay area artists, Monica Canilao and Kyle Ranson. This body of work/instalation is the culmination of a longtime friendship and shared vision of Canilao and Ranson. The artists sum up the idea of the show this way:
"One Long Funeral Song" addresses the clashes and minglings of two magicks. the black, vampiric conjurings of colonialism and the nature magic of indigenous, poor and creative peoples... the contrast between secret societies and open-armed, cooperitive communities. Monica Canilao and Kyle Ranson build a world around the hope that perhaps a third and beautiful magick could be born from this long and bloodied struggle. Monica Canilao works with found objects and materials such as paper and fabric to weave sewn together structures that explore space, community and life and figures, both animal and human. According to Canilao, she "understands that even the most fleeting moments can be the most poignant ones, and so, she is fearless in her use of disintegrating materials such as paper, fiber, love and hope. What presents in her work is a feeling of spontaneity and mysticism.

Black Founders: The Free Black Community in the Early Republic
March 10 - October 10
The struggle of American blacks to secure rights as citizens—as free people—began years before our first bearded President took up his pen. The Library Company’s newest exhibition will feature Absalom Jones, Richard and Sarah Allen, and many others who worked for the end of slavery long before Abraham Lincoln. It packs in over two centuries of history, creating a sense of slavery’s scope in American history. The issues of abolitionism, exodus, and white supremacy consumed popular media for decades before the Civil War. “Black Founders” will give visitors a choice view of items important in the development of liberty and justice for all.
Now on View in the Library Company’s Louise Lux-Sions and Harry Sions Gallery
Open to the public free of charge from 9:00am to 4:45 pm, Monday through Friday.

66th Exposition: A Co-operation; An Exhibition
14 July – 5 September, 2008
Reception,11 July, 2-4 p.m
ACPS is presenting a show in co-operation with the Free Library Of Philadelphia. The prints to be exhibited will be matted, to be viewed in 22 gallery cases, 11 along each side of the west corridor leading to the Executive Staff offices. The original-forming members of the American Color Print Society meeting in 1939 were artist revolutionaries. Their first organized show, in 1940, heralded the arrival of the contemporary American print. Previously printmaking had been restricted to black and white etchings, at least in regard to juried shows; finally there was critical recognition and acceptance. The original 85 artists opened printmaking to the use of color and encouraged experimentation, which today has become part of our American art tradition: color lithography, block printing, etching, intaglio, monotype, digital printing etc. Experimentation has extended to the materials and their combinations in printing: Oriental papers, rag papers, Arch papers, newspapers, even to printing on paper towels, and mixing techniques, etc. The tradition of modernity, experimentation and excellence continues. The prints exhibited present a national perspective, with members’ works from throughout the United States, in addition to the local Philadelphia area. While all members share the fact of their professionalism, each is an individual with their own unique aesthetic perspectives and techniques, and anticipate being joined by like minded artists and a curious and knowing audience.

HODGEPODGE
Falling Cow gallery
Hodgepodge features more than 100 works spanning the thirty year career of Philadelphiapainter and musician Tim Bowen. The show begins in 1976 with Bowen's initial use of female nudes and guitar players as a motif, continues through the Brueghel inspired figure compositions of the early 80s and follows with the intricate 3-dimensional shadowbox series, glass and fabric pieces of the 90s and concludes with the large scale multiple-panel politically charged post-911 paintings. Many of the works have never before been shown publicly. Despite his ever-changing diverse subject matter, use of materials and stylistic approaches the artist's populist sensibilities always manage to delight and provoke the viewer.

To promote creative exchange between Danish and foreign artists and art institutions, The Danish Arts Council has established an artist-in-residence program in Denmark. The program makes it possible to invite artists from abroad to stay and work in Denmark for extended periods.
The Danish Arts Council will let individuals or institutions within the Danish art world propose candidate artists from abroad – preferably with a view of working together with the artists during their staying in Denmark on projects such as exhibitions, workshops, public talks, and the like. Based on the proposals submitted, The Danish Arts Council’s Committee for International Visual Art will decide whom to invite.
What the Artists are Offered
In 2009, the program offers residencies ranging from 3-6 months, but application for shorter periods of residency is also possible.
In Copenhagen, The Visual Arts Centre will provide the residents with living space and studios free of charge. The program also allows individuals or institutions outside of Copenhagen to organize one or more artist residencies of 3-6 months of duration – perhaps linked to the location in question. In the case of a residency outside of Copenhagen, it is up to the applying institution or individuals to find accommodations and studio space for the artist, subsequently financed by the program within an economic framework agreed upon in advance. The program does not cover the accommodation or expenses of accompanying family members.
